Coating Scratch and
Streak Detection
No Longer Unattainable!
THE COMPANY
R.K.B.® OPTO-ELECTRONICS, INC., (or R.K.B as it is more widely known) was
founded more than a half century ago. Located in Syracuse, New York, R.K.B
designs, manufactures and implements the most advanced innovative on-line fault
detection solutions available.
The cornerstone of RKB success is its technological expertise headed by the
leading industry expert William Dobbie. Under the guidance of Mr. Dobbie, R.K.B
has led the way in providing accuracy, consistency and reliability in ultra
high-speed, online web inspection for more than 45 years. Recently perfecting a
revolutionary technique for the detection of coating scratches and streaks,
R.K.B
has taken the lead again.
Called the Model 3020®, this innovative technique uses very sensitive sensing
and electronic technology to achieve scratch (score) detection as small as
0.0002 inches (0.005mm) wide at all known machine speeds. Certainly a phenomenon
unattainable until now!
THE PRODUCT
Since
the invention of the CCD (charged coupled device) back in the 1960s by Bell
Labs, CCD technology has become the industry-standard image sensor. Like many,
R.K.B developed full sheet imaging solutions using CCD technology, in particular,
line scanning technology. Unlike other suppliers, R.K.B based its solution on a
more advanced sensing platform, providing greater benefits such as faster
scanning times, higher resolution and consistent performance.
However,
R.K.B discovered that line scanning technology, for all its capabilities, was
ineffective and impractical for the detection of subtle line faults like coating
scratches or scores. Taking this knowledge to another level, R.K.B envisioned a
radical approach that could guarantee reliable detection of very subtle
scratches. So radical was this innovation, the United States Patent Office
awarded R.K.B patent protection. For the first time in the history of online
inspection, a solution is available for coating scratch and streak detection.
Based on patented technology, the solution can be applied to any web or sheet
fed process where scratch and streak detection is required. An energy source is
mounted to span the material being monitored. The energy source generates
electromagnetic energy that impinges upon or transmits through the web. Patented
and highly sensitive electronics are used to enhance the signal to noise (fault
to the product) level by ‘squashing’ the noise down while retaining the
defect signal. The result is a very clean and discernible fault that is
indisputably detected. Once identified, the information is transmitted to the
Quality Assurance Management System (QAMS).
THE PROOF
High-quality
coated board and papers are the ‘keys’ to success for
Reno De Medici S.p.A.,
España. To help maintain its leadership in supplying high quality products to
its market, Reno incorporates many types of online quality monitoring systems.
For sheet quality, they turned to R.K.B. After careful analysis, Reno decided to
implement R.K.B patented coating streak and scratch detection solution for its
quality assurance requirements. Using our patented and proprietary technologies,
the M3020 monitors for subtle faults such as scratches, streaks dirt and holes.
The M3020 insures that defective material is rejected prior to shipping. All
material is graded then salvaged or broke. This process allows greater
flexibility for Reno to ensure its customers are provided with only the
highest-quality product available, therefore increasing market share and bottom
line profits. Since the systems inception at Reno, quality production has
increased, maintaining the companies’ position as a leader in its
market.
WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP
Being a leader in the supply of web inspection solutions means more than
being number one in ‘size’. It means providing your clients with accurate,
consistent and reliable solutions that work day in and day out.
R.K.B is committed to its industry and to the paper manufacturers who depend on it
to ensure that quality is maintained at the highest level. R.K.B relies on
openness and cooperation, enabling R.K.B to become a valuable link in the overall
process of paper making. All of RKB products abide by stringent
manufacturing, ISO and CE directives. For more information, contact Bruce Dobbie
