R.K.B. Machine Vision Web Inspection System Acquired by European Specialty Paper Maker


CCD Machine Vision Inspection Technology

Syracuse, NY, March 22, 2007 - R.K.B. OPTO-ELECTRONICS, INC., a leader in providing machine vision, web inspection, splice detection and quality assurance and control technologies, has been selected to provide its machine vision web inspection technology to a leading European Specialty Paper Manufacturer.  The technology, which uses high resolution CCD cameras, will be designed to inspection transformer type materials for various critical holes and flaws.  Our machine vision technology will guarantee the detection of holes down to sizes as small as 0.1 mm diameter (industry standards are 0.5mm).  Simple and very cost effective, the R.K.B. machine vision inspection technology is becoming a more frequently used technology over complicated, high end, brand name systems that have proven to be operator unfriendly, unreliable in detection and plagued with serviceability issues and maintenance upkeep. 


The R.K.B. machine vision technology is based on using high resolution line scan CCD camera technology.  While competitive solutions all but use 2048 pixel format sensors, R.K.B. utilizes a variety of sensors depending on the application from 512 through 4096 (in some cases higher).  As a result of using a variety of CCD chip formats, R.K.B. can offer a system solution more in line with what customers are trying to achieve with their quality assurance and control R.K.B. Machine Vision Inspection Sensor; Line Scaninitiatives and guarantee the detection of defect faults required.  Similar in basic concept to all web inspection systems, the R.K.B. machine vision technology comes with an inspection assembly that generally mounts above the web material it is monitoring and perpendicular to a light source located below the web that facilitate the required energy needed for hole and flaw defect detection.  In grades that appear opaque, reflective lighting is utilized where defects other than holes are required.  As with older inspection technologies like phototransistors, the photosites contained within CCD chips collect energy and then reads that energy out to processing circuitry.  As with photocells, the increase in energy represents a hole, oil, light spot or some other type of defect that allows for the sensor to read a high energy source.  Adversely, spot type defect faults like dirt, scale, bugs will reduce the amount of energy the sensor is reading facilitating the identification of that type of defect by way of a negative pulse.  All inspection systems worldwide operate on the same basic premise. Once the defect fault has been detected, the electronic signal (initially analog as it is with all CCD sensors since the CCD chip itself is an analog device) is processed and converted to digital signals which are then further processed to facilitate defect typing, sizing and location.  All processing is done by R.K.B.'s quality assurance management system that uses, as default, Microsoft Access for information logging.  Using this database has allowed us to simplify the data logging of all events related to our machine vision technology and provided customers the capabilities of remote access by their office suite programs such as word, excel and access where custom oriented reporting functions can be derived from within.  This eliminates the need for customers to purchase specialized software reporting functions  and wasting money on tasks that firmly belong within the customers reporting structure.

As an option, R.K.B. can incorporate a defect imaging platform that provides real time and actual photos of defects stored as *.jpg format where required.  This specialized proprietary option is more accurate and reliable as a defect fault identifier since you have the capability to actually see the defect and not a made up representation of a possible defect such as offered by competitive solutions.  Additionally, our machine vision technologies can be easily integrated into mill wide systems, marking units, control devices, PLC and other reporting platforms for customer traceability and use.  R.K.B. is pleased to have been selected to supply their quality assurance and control needs and are proud to have been selected as their valued supplier for their high-speed hole detection requirements.  “Over the years, R.K.B. has provided many customers with very successful and reliable defect fault inspection in a wide variety of web based materials.  Our partnerships have grown and will continue to grow as the need for essential and reliable defect fault detection becomes more vital to ensure customers receive the highest quality and defect free product available” stated R.K.B.
