"Where the Science of Quality Assurance is still an Art!"

European Manufacturer of Converting Machinery Orders

Multiple Web Inspection Solutions From R.K.B.

R.K.B. OPTO-ELECTRONICS, INC., a leader in providing machine vision, web inspection, splice detection, edge marking and quality assurance and control technologies, has been selected to supply its state of the art classic Model 1032 Classic® Splice Detector™ Technology.  The equipment will be shipped to a leading European manufacturer of converting machinery who supplies finishing solutions to the paper, film and foil industries.  The Model 1032 Classic® Splice Detector™ Technology will be mounted on sheeter/sorter solutions just prior to the slitting/diversion process where all webs of material come together at one point for processing.  Our Model 1032 Classic® Splice Detector™ Technology guarantees the detection of all splice (joint) tape faults.  Applicable to any web fed process, our Model 1032 Classic® Splice Detector™ Technology helps manufacturers achieve their quality assurance initiatives by reducing down time, eliminating broke and preventing costly repairs to rolls, dies, blankets and other sensitive production equipment.  Designed for edge of web mounting, the Model 1032 Classic® Splice Detector™ Technology can be positioned anywhere along the web path.  It can be easily repositioned to accommodate changes in web width in support of just-in-time, short run, or high product mix conditions.  Simple and very cost effective, the R.K.B. Model 1032 Classic® Splice Detector™ Technology has become the most commonly used inspection solution worldwide.  To date R.K.B. has installed over 5000 inspection solutions in over 130 countries.  Unequaled in performance, our Model 1032 Classic® Splice Detector™ Technology will provide a return on investment within 8 hours of use.

R.K.B. is proud to have been selected to provide the most widely used, state-of-the-art detection technology available today. "This is an vital partnership for R.K.B., and one that we will continually work on to ensure the highest possible quality can be achieved when our products are implemented as OEM” said R.K.B.  With manufacturing costs ever increasing, it has become essential for reliable and consistent defect detection in a wide variety of conversion processes whereby the elimination of all types of defects are essential. R.K.B. and our partners offer our customers with a comprehensive solution that are not affected by discrete basis weight changes, changes in caliper of material, color of material, machine production speeds and type of defects.

The Model 1032 Classic® Splice Detector™ Technology monitors the "Material Thickness (Caliper)" value of web based products such as paper, film, rubber, and plastics that the technology is applied to.  Due to its proprietary design, the material being monitored, which is a medium or substance, transmits electric force without conduction; an insulator if you will, and as such, any sudden and abrupt change in its dielectric value will create a very subtle differential that is picked up and reported.  At the point of differential, the dielectric value is "out of sync".  This signal, measured in the microvolt level is processed with proprietary circuitry that outputs an electronic signal representative of a splice (joint) tape fault.  Since this detection is performed on a comparative basis, long term variances in material caliper, coat weight, basis weight, and other mechanical properties are noneffective and do not interfere with actual detection and results.  This means there is never a false signal due to material electronic noise which negatively affect photo-eye sensors and ultrasonic type sensors.  The Model 1032 Classic® Splice Detector™ Technology is auto-calibrating which eliminates any need for operational adjustments when you change grades of material, material weight, type of material, color of material and number of material webs which can all be processed at one common inspection point.  Additionally, the Model 1032 Classic® Splice Detector™ Technology is not compromised relative to process speed meaning it can be applied to any line 30 fpm (9.144 m/min) to well above 10000 fpm (3048 meter m/min).  Each Model 1032 Classic® Splice Detector™ Technology comes with an internal amber alarm indicator to indicate a "splice fault" as well as the red power indicator lamp.  In addition, a dry contact relay is provided so customers can output splice signals to activate sheeter reject gates, audio/visual alarms, counters, edge marking systems, plc units and other various control type systems.  The technology is designed for input power of 120/220 VAC, single phase, 50/60 Hz.   The dry output contact closures are rated for 0.1 Amps @ 120VAC or 0.05 Amp @ 220VAC.  The unit also provides a DC digital pulse @ 10 milliseconds (+/-3)that is a low to high.

R.K.B. pioneered the field of web inspection for web based paper, film, foil and allied material manufacturing.  R.K.B. developed and patented many of the technologies currently in use today such as infrared phototransistor flaw detection technology, inductive and capacitive detection technology, ultraviolet phototube hole detection technology and camera based machine vision web inspection technology.  In fact, R.K.B. was the first company in the world that incorporated camera sensors for the detection of defect faults in web material in the mid 1970's and patented this technique called the VIDISCAN 7000.  Today R.K.B. invests a majority of its capital to research and development in new defect fault detection sensor techniques.  Among our many innovations besides our patented splice detection technology, which is the world leading technology used for the detection of splice (joint) tape faults, is our very successful patented Model 3020 OPTOMIZER® Coating Streak/Scratch Inspection Technology.  This technology, now being emulated and copied (badly we might add), by various European inspection solution suppliers, detects streaks and scratches as small as 1 micron (0.000039 inches (0.001 millimeter)) wide at any known process speed.  This is not only theoretical proven, but proven online at various coated paper makers worldwide.  Refer to the three studies provided herein for customer verification of the success of our streak detection technology which can be found at the following links "European Coated Board Installation", "Consolidated Papers Inc., On-line Evaluation Verification" and the comparative study done by the "American Forest Products Association in conjunction with the Institute for Paper Science and Technology".  These three vital documents were produced in a bipartisan process by each of these companies.  R.K.B. OPTO-ELECTRONICS, INC., designs, develops, manufactures, and markets the most diverse line of machine vision and web inspection technologies currently available to web based material manufacturers. R.K.B., has offices and partners worldwide in Asia, Europe, South America and the Middle East.
