"Where the Science of Quality Assurance is still an Art!"

Kimberly-Clark Corp., Neenah Paper Div Upgrades Keymark

Registration Control Solution by R.K.B. OPTO-ELECTRONICS, INC.

R.K.B. OPTO-ELECTRONICS, INC., a leader in providing machine vision, web inspection, splice detection, edge marking and quality assurance and control technologies, has been selected to provide its Model 1108 Keymark® Register Control™ Technology.  The equipment will be installed on European sheeter/sorting equipment to monitor and ensure in-register of all watermark specialty paper grades.  Simple and very cost effective, the R.K.B. Model 1108 Keymark® Register Control™ Technology is commonly used in the area of watermark registration.

The Model 1108 Keymark® Register Control™ Technology will accurately, reliably and consistently monitor and detect ‘Bug’ (keymarks) marks that are manufactured into a paper web at specific intervals for process control. The ‘Bug’ marks are produced by reducing the amount of fiber located in the area where the “Bug’ mark is to be located. This reduction in fiber area allows for an increase in energy to be transmitted through the web where it is detected by state-of-the-art sensory technology. Once detected, an electronic signal will be generated and processed by proprietary circuitry to a specific voltage pulse. This pulse will be conditioned to provide a frequency equal to 0.01 inches (0.254 millimeters) or better for each pulse generated. The accuracy can be set at + or – 0.02 inches (0.508 millimeters) or better.  The system is designed to inform operational staff of ‘Bug’ mark placement and to make any necessary adjustments for out of sync watermarks, + or – the distance of the preset limit set by operational staff. The inspection station will be interfaced into a main system control unit consisting of an electronic control console and an operator control console and an energy source unit. The operational control station will provide and indicate actual distance between watermarks and sound an alarm when the watermarks become out of sync.

R.K.B. pioneered the field of web inspection for web based paper, film, foil and allied material manufacturing.  R.K.B. developed and patented many of the technologies currently in use today such as infrared phototransistor flaw detection technology, inductive and capacitive detection technology, ultraviolet phototube hole detection technology and camera based machine vision web inspection technology.  In fact, R.K.B. was the first company in the world that incorporated camera sensors for the detection of defect faults in web material in the mid 1970's and patented this technique called the VIDISCAN 7000.  Today R.K.B. invests a majority of its capital to research and development in new defect fault detection sensor techniques.  Among our many innovations besides our patented splice detection technology, which is the world leading technology used for the detection of splice (joint) tape faults, is our very successful patented Model 3020 OPTOMIZER® Coating Streak/Scratch Inspection Technology.  This technology, now being emulated and copied (badly we might add), by various European inspection solution suppliers, detects streaks and scratches as small as 1 micron (0.000039 inches (0.001 millimeter)) wide at any known process speed.  This is not only theoretical proven, but proven online at various coated paper makers worldwide.  Refer to the three studies provided herein for customer verification of the success of our streak detection technology which can be found at the following links "European Coated Board Installation", "Consolidated Papers Inc., On-line Evaluation Verification" and the comparative study done by the "American Forest Products Association in conjunction with the Institute for Paper Science and Technology".  These three vital documents were produced in a bipartisan process by each of these companies.  R.K.B. OPTO-ELECTRONICS, INC., designs, develops, manufactures, and markets the most diverse line of machine vision and web inspection technologies currently available to web based material manufacturers. R.K.B., has offices and partners worldwide in Asia, Europe, South America and the Middle East.
