Infrared Flaw Detector at Leading Film Manufacturer


R.K.B. OPTO-ELECTRONICS, INC., a leader in providing machine vision, web inspection, splice detection and quality assurance and control technologies, announced today the successful startup of its state of the art infrared flaw detector technology.  Mounted on proprietary equipment, the inspection unit will provide operational staff with vital information on defect distribution, type and location.  Installed at a leading film manufacturer, the infrared flaw detector technology will guarantee the detection of hole and spot type defects (i.e., bugs, dirt, scale, holes) down to sizes as small as 0.8 mm diameter.  Simple and very cost effective, the R.K.B. Infrared Flaw Detector Technology, originally patented by R.K.B., is a common fixture in many web based material processes where the detection of quality defects is required.

Infrared Flaw Detector TechnologyThe R.K.B. Infrared Flaw Detector Technology offers quality inspection of web based materials for holes, dirt, scale, bugs and other visual defects at reasonable costs.  Ideally suited for installation on paper machines, coaters, laminators, slitter/winders, sheeters, and in cold rolled metals, the Infrared Flaw Detector provides high quality inspection to demanding standards.  The Infrared Flaw Detector utilizes an array of photocells located very close to the web surface at 25mm intervals cross machine direction.  The photocells monitor the intensities of infrared light transmitted through the web.  Proprietary circuitry assures uniform response and long term stability of each and every system.  The photocells are mounted on interchangeable inspection modules with each module containing a standard 6 format that covers 15.24 centimeter in the cross machine direction.  A narrow inspection aperture is implemented to effectively limit the "field of view" in the machine direction thus dramatically reducing electronic "noise" created by the web material itself.  This ensures a very high signal to noise ratio is achieved.  The aperture design also eliminate the need to mask the system, unlike European counterparts, from mill ambient light. 


Infrared Flaw Detector TechnologyTypically the sensing assembly is mounted on the top side of the web material perpendicular to the lamp source below the web.  Typically infrared light is transmitted through the web toward the inspection assembly.  When the photo sensors monitor a distinct change in the intensity of infrared light, an electronic output is created signaling the presence of a defect.  For the detection of holes, the system would register an increase in energy received while for spot type defects like dirt or bugs, an reduction in energy is received.  Once a defect is detected, the electronic signal is then further processed to provide type of defect, size of defect and location of defect.  The technology also provide for repeating defect analysis which is very critical in process machine maintenance and evaluation.  This analysis aids operational staff as to the defect causing problem such as wire holes, damaged fabric, slime buildup and other various conditions which reduces production, quality product and overall income per ton produced.  The Infrared Flaw Detector can be mounted on any web material process where quality assurance and control initiatives are required.
